Who is in charge of your brain?

The more you think about this, the weirder it gets….

Let’s think about the layers in your head.  At the bottom you have the subconscious survival processes, that you’re not even aware of – your blood is pumping around your body, your digestion is doing thing involving your spleen and liver etc, who knows what but thankfully it seems to work, most of the time.

Then at level 2 there are your emotions, which well up from somewhere until you become aware of them.  Can you control them?  Well, maybe partially.  You can choose whether to wallow in them or to push back against them, telling yourself not to fall victim to them.

“Telling yourself”….   This is your conscious brain, ‘level 3’, telling your subconscious what to do.  So we can observe our subconscious and think “I need to hit my forehand with more spin next time” or “I need to stop talking and listen more next time” or “I wish I wasn’t so impatient”.

So is this third level, the talking voice, the top level?  I don’t think so, because I can observe my talking voice, and sometimes I don’t like the talking voice, I would like to control and change the talking voice.  So I have a level above my talking voice, my level 4 ….I think.   Do you?

And then there’s meditation, where you switch off the talking voice for a bit.

How does meditation work, and what are the benefits?  That’s what I cover in this video:

If you feel a bit over-stressed then you’d certainly enjoy my full course on stress and anxiety, which covers all sorts of practical things you can do – it starts with controlling your thoughts, but also covers reducing the amount coming in, and increasing the amount you can cope with, so you can get back in control.
