What does “important” really mean?

The essence of time management is to spend as much time as you can on the important things in life. Which sounds easy, until you start thinking about it.

For example – what’s more important, having fun with my friends, or learning Spanish?

Is buying food important?

What about work??

Over the years, teaching time management, I’ve come up with a number of different ways to assess how important something is, but they do give slightly different results. Have a look at this table:

importance grid

But despite their differences you can see that the 5 year strategy and the beach with kids are both imporant, while the other things are not – even though most of them HAVE to be done, they are just some of the many boring things that need to be done, ideally in the miniumum possible time.

So you can pick any of the questions in my left hand column, and use them as your seive to find out what is REALLY important.
