The negotiating sweet spot

We all know we should negotiate over the price of, say, a house we want to buy.

But what if we really don’t want to lose it? Of course, you can still negotiate, and then back down and pay the full price if you have to, but it feels a lot harder.

So another tactic is to make really low offers on houses that we don’t really want. But hang on, what if one of them gets accepted?? Sure, you save ten or twenty grand, which would be very nice, but then you have to live in a house that you don’t love….

So I’m thinking that the answer is to find houses that you would he happy to live in, but also that you would be happy to lose if they won’t give you a great deal. This isn’t going to be easy – there may not be many in that category, but it’s a GREAT place to be negotiating!
