Which Gantt of Gantts to use?

Hi

I don’t expect you to immediately understand my diagram – but it does show the kind of thinking and the kind of options, and I can help talk you through it if you want.

Planning resources for multiple projects is one of the msot difficult things to do, because it’s a cube of Projects, People (resources), and Time. So for example a Gantt chart shows the People/Tasks over time, but only for one project. Or my ‘Battleships” Gantt of Gantts shows projects over time, but only for one resource. And your calendar shows all your projects over time, but only for you.

So how can we work out whether we can do all the projects we want to do, or, perhaps a beetter question, how long it will take to do all the projects that we want to do?

The answer is you need a Gantt of Gantts, but how to draw it out will depend on how many projects you have, and whether you have a bottleneck resource or not.

Hence this decision free flowchart thing I have made (after 20 years of thinking about this!)

Flow chart of which G of Gs

Is it the final answer? It might be, I’m not sure yet. I need to test it out on a few people to be sure….
