I love my apple macbook air laptop, and like my iPad, and I love my iPhone, but….
my daughter just bought a Samsung phone having been a loyal Apple-ite for years, and we had the following discussion about phones:
- No headphone jack!! The arrogance of Apple to get rid of the jack…
- iCloud is totally confusing – what backs up to where, if you want to delete from everywhere it won’t, and if you don’t want to delete all the copies it does. And you have to pay extra to get enough memory space (I think!)
- Apple maps!! How rubbish were they! And still it comes up as a default instead of Google Maps every how and then.
- I’m not using much apple software now – I like Google diary, I use gmail, and of course the maps
- ITunes player is hopeless – uploading more music is a pain, just the play music interface is utterly confusing, and it seems to be unashamedly aimed at getting you into the store to buy stuff
- Sync of my iPad v slow and often doesn’t work – and older iPads can’t cope with newer apps, etc so the hardware is getting out of date really fast, like a PC!
- Sync with iTunes generally is horrible – I have had to develop lots of workarounds to a) get tracks into iTunes (drag and drop often doesn’t work) and b) for when it says This device is not authorised (when it is!) and c) for when it gets stuck on step 2 of sync, the backing up (I have to tell it to exit apple mobile backup.exe) – generally: aargh! With any other MP3 player it’s just drag and drop files across into a fielder – brilliant!
- Spotify is much better than iTunes as a player of music you don’t own
- Apple Notes not as good as Evernote
- Updates seem to be getting more frequent and annoying, almost like a PC!
- The new email client on my iPhone is horribly confusing when you are following threads, it says “See more from Fred” and then you get the newer messages under the current one but with some newer ones still at the top as well
- Upgrading of memory on Android is easy and cheap, just put in a bigger micro SD card
- Apps from Apple that you can’t delete eg bookshelf – these have to live on your phone even if you don’t want them
- You an’t replace the battery to lengthen life of phone – she it dies your phone is dead – or have two batteries for when you travel.

I know that nerds will email me to say there are ways around all this, and that Android also has problems like the above, but still, the days of Apple being easy and seamless feel as if they are slipping away, as if they don’t care or they don’t talk to each other in the different departments Apple, you are living on reputation and that won’t last for ever….!
