People often say to me “I’d love to start my own business but I’m at work full time and in the evenings I have to cook / look after kids etc so I just don’t have the time.” I can see that.
And then other people say to me “I’ve recently been made redundant and ideally I would start up my own business, I’ve always wanted to, but I need income right away so I’m going to get another job as soon as I can”. And getting another job is probably quicker than getting your own business off the ground – sales take a bit of time to get rolling. So that makes sense.
So: It’s never the perfect time!
If you have the money from your current job then you probably don’t have the time, and if you have the time (no job) then you probably don’t have the money.
But maybe if you’re full time you can find 5-10 hours a week and just make it happen?? Give up some social activities or some rest, pay a bit of a price for the sake of the future you want?
And maybe if you’re ‘between jobs’ you can reduce your spending or use some savings, investing in your future. Starting your own business doesn’t have to be expensive if you do it carefully and cleverly. Start selling and delivering after the minimum viable time and money invested in preparing.
Two other quick thoughts here:
a) if you don’t have the money to spend on setting up your own business, doing the thing you love, after all these years of working for someone else, then your life plan isn’t working very well so far is it? And what’s going to change? Another 20 years will go by and you still won’t have anything saved up. So something’s got to change!
b) think carefully about borrowing money for your dream business – there’s a risk that it won’t pan out, particularly if you don’t have someone to help you, …and you don’t want to end up in debt. Try to build it so you are never in debt, just reinvest whatever you sell, slowly at the start.
So time and money: Are these just excuses, really, to avoid taking the plunge?? That’s what you’ve got to ask yourself.
I think Part Time work is probably the best – at least you have some time and some money. But even then, I know people who say it’s not giving them enough time and not enough money to start their ideal business!
So I would say that any of the three situations is worth considering – none of them definitely rule out your ability to get started on a self-employed venture.
And if you’re waiting for the ideal time to come, when you have loads of time and loads of money, you’ll probably wait for ever.
