Time Management when you enjoy your work

Is it OK to work longer hours, if you’re enjoying it?

Does that mean you are a work-a-holic, or that the boss has conned you in some way?

I think the objective is to maximise play, obviously,

and probably minimise the part that is “work but not fun” – although if you get enough achievement back from it then it could be still worth doing.

But the middle zone is a total no-brainer!  You’re getting achievement (and probably payment) for something that you enjoy, so why would you NOT maximise that?

However, for many people the picture is more like this:

or even like this:

in which case maybe it’s time to get another job, to search for a way to earn money that you will enjoy – since, after all, you are spending 5 days a week of most of your life doing it.

But I think the most interesting problem is this one:

Is it OK??

Clearly it’s great that there is almost none of your work that you don’t love, but, also, there is almost none of your life that isn’t work. Work has expanded, because you love it, and has taken over your life.

If you have a family then they’ll be pretty unhappy about that. The same with friends and social activities. But if you have no family, and no wish to have a life outside your work, then what’s wrong with this?? Why not put your whole life into your work??

I think it’s probably fine, but risky! You don’t want to realise later that you could have had more than work in your life. And sometimes things come back and bite us later – the company we gave our life to makes us redundant, or we can’t sell the business that we have spent our life building, or we realise that everything has been a waste of time. So be careful!

Conclusion of all this:

THIS is the ultimate to aim for. And you can do it!

  1. Super powerful visualisation. I’m currently working on maximising the overlap. The ultimate goal being the last one. Thanks for the inspiration.
